"Too Legit to Quit": Tough Mudder Experience
A Team Captain’s Perspective by Bertrand Newson
“Teamwork ~ Pride ~ Self Confidence ~ Lifetime Bond ~ Togetherness”
For many reasons participating in Tough Mudder has created priceless memories and made a profound impact on friends and family in my inner circle. Also, it’s allowed me to meet some wonderful people in the process. Two years ago after putting together a few teams for some local running events and smaller obstacle course races (Warrior Dash etc), my crew and I were looking for a bigger challenge. Most people consider the Tough Mudder the “Super Bowl” event of mud run obstacle courses. A buddy who lives in SoCal (who I met during a obstacle course event in Temecula in 2011) shared his first Tough Mudder experience with me and another close friend (Chris Smith) and we were HOOKED! We immediately signed up for the SoCal Tough Mudder in July 2012 and had a total of 6 teammates which included my younger brother Bernardo who’s a kidney transplant survivor!
Big Bear - July 2012
Words cannot express the joy, satisfaction, pride, level of accomplishment and team bonding that happened during the SoCal 2012 Tough Mudder due to my teammates and fellow participants. Priceless! For a group of strong minded, middle aged adults, we felt pretty good about ourselves when we crossed the finish line and had that awesome kick ass orange headband and world's best beer handed to us! At that moment it was clear that I wanted to share this experience with others!
Team Too Legit to Quit (15 ppl strong) participated in the NorCal Sept. 2012 Tough Mudder and had a BLAST. From there a small group participated in the SoCal Feb. 2013 Tough Mudder and we had fun minus the freezing temps, but it only made the experience more memorable!
As team captain, I’m so proud of my crew’s most recent efforts in finishing the NorCal July 2013 (Tahoe) Tough Mudder. By far it was the best experience and most gratifying. We started the day with 21 team members and finished with 23. We managed to pick up two people including an international participant from Japan who spoke very little English, but nonetheless he felt right at home on our team. Each one of my team members has their own unique story on what motivated them to say “YES” to me when I approached them about joining the team and participating in this event. To see their faces after we crossed the finish line was very moving and emotional and we loved the fact that the MC was getting the crowed in a frenzy singing “Too Legit to Quit” as we made our way through the Electro Therapy final obstacle (EPIC)!

Team Too Legit to Quit and Tough Mudder has been a perfect marriage as we both support the Wounded Warrior Project. My team was sponsored by the Taji 100 project (www.taji100.com) which helped raised over $15,000 for WWP in February while promoting health and fitness! Big thank you to the Tough Mudder leadership team for putting together an amazing event!
